The founders of Clutch Space Systems recognised that software designed systems could bring significant economic and technical advantages to space operations. This was realised over years of experience working on several Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Earth observation missions as designers, suppliers, customers and customer representatives.

Complexity exists within the ground segment due to a historic reliance on infrastructure built using proprietary standards and this issue is greater for New Space companies incorporating different spacecraft manufacturers and spacecraft. This creates significant challenges for customers willing to receive data from multiple satellites that are operated or delivered by different suppliers.

Recognising that the LEO ground station scene was facing exponential growth with a limited existing infrastructure, Clutch Space Systems set out to target this market. We developed and tested a fully software defined ground segment solution in an effort to disrupt this established market by reducing the cost of the back-end equipment and basing it on a more flexible software-based model.
